Ways to preview car mods before you buy
Wheels, wraps and body kits cost real money. Here is how the common ways to see them first compare, including when you don't need our app.
We compare kinds of options rather than specific products, because every shop, tool and app is different. Check a specific service for its exact features and prices.
Comparison
| Option | What you get | Uses your own car | Cost | Effort | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tuning or wrap shop render | A mock-up made by the shop | Yes, from your photos | Often free with an order, otherwise paid | Low for you, takes days | Tied to that shop's parts |
| Wheel visualizers | Wheels placed on a stock car image | Usually a similar stock car | Free | Low | Mostly wheels only |
| 3D car configurators and games | A 3D model you can tune | Only if your car is in the game | Free to paid | Medium | Looks like a model, not your photo |
| Photo editing by hand | Exactly what you draw | Yes | Free to paid software | High: hours of editing | Needs real editing skills |
| General AI image tools | An image from your own prompt | Sometimes, if they accept a photo | Varies | Writing and rewriting prompts | No parts list, no build history |
| ModGarage | Your car photo with 13 styles and 105 part options, a build sheet, history and compare | Yes | Free download; Premium subscription to generate | A photo and a few taps | AI illustrations, not fitment advice; iPhone only |
When a shop render is the better choice
If you have already chosen a shop and specific parts, its mock-up uses the exact wheel or wrap film you will get and comes with fitment advice. ModGarage can help you arrive with a clearer idea of the look you want.
When a wheel visualizer is the better choice
If the only question is which catalog wheel to order, a manufacturer's visualizer shows that exact wheel with real sizes. It usually works on a stock image of a similar car, not your photo, and rarely covers paint, aero or stance.
When a 3D configurator or game is the better choice
If you want to rotate the car, play with dozens of parts for free and your model is included, a 3D configurator or racing game is fun and detailed. The result is a model, not your own car in your own photo.
When editing by hand is the better choice
If you have the skills and want pixel-level control, a photo editor gives you exactly what you draw. It takes far longer, and every change starts from scratch.
When ModGarage fits
ModGarage is for quickly seeing your actual car with a new look and keeping track of ideas: a vehicle profile, 13 styles, 10 part categories, a build sheet for every build, a build history and side-by-side compare. It is iPhone-only, generating builds needs a subscription with no free tries, and the images are illustrations, not fitment advice.
Plan a build without any app
- Take a clean three-quarter photo of your car in daylight.
- Collect photos of the same model with mods you like and note what they share.
- Decide the order: wheels and ride height first, then paint or wrap, then aero.
- Check wheel offset, tire size and ride height with a shop before buying.
- Check local rules for tint darkness, lighting colors and exhaust.
